He has done things 10,000 times as bad β the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to foreign assistance amounts to 600,000 and increasing, and this week research projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared β truly, no previous leader would have contemplated β independently wrecking large sections of the presidential residence to build a royal-themed celebration hall, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the nation's most affluent, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.
We went from 'the humble will receive the planet' toward 'the humble will perish to cholera'
As disorienting as it is to watch the chief executive seek toι’ θ¦ the traditional concept about democracy and substitute it with its direct contrary, there exists a significant segment within America who wouldn't consider it totally unfamiliar. This includes individuals like us β within elder demographics almost a majority β who were raised within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations transformed the Christ we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they transformed an image of love into an icon of hostility who approves exactly the harshness that he condemned in the Gospel; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, yet it remains disconcerting via comparable methods, a disorienting gut punch for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Gains Ground
So let me first describe the Jesus that I grew up with, because theoretically Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the rapidly expanding group of Americans may possess limited understanding of him as they consider themselves atheists or uncertain individuals or religiously unaffiliated. I raise no objection with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of substantial value within Christian narrative.
It is emphatically not the account of a mighty king emerging; conversely, a baby is born to homeless parents in a garage, who are forced to hastily depart to a different country to escape covert authorities. The apparent and clear reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts requests a form of radical love centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the masses, but due to its intrinsic extremism demanding to be controlled. During the 1950s it was restrained by dilution β Protestantism was so dominant that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Finest Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance regarding Trump emerge during the previous year. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and seems to have inspired electorate to turn out in large quantities in interim political contests.
