Fed Reduces Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during economic turbulence stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve stated that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and stays somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Gathering of important financial statistics has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the shutdown.

Data Gap Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.

The number of jobs created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release once the shutdown began. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had previously attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are rising, albeit slowly. Prices rose 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target price increase is 2%.
