An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of the Venezuelan leader shortly prior to it was officially announced, raising questions about whether someone profited from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Predictions

Predictions made on the forecasting site, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be removed from office by the end of January increased in the hours before President Donald Trump stated on the weekend that the Venezuelan leader had been taken into custody.

A particular user, which became a member recently and placed four wagers, all on Venezuela, profited a total of $436K from a starting bet of $32.5K.

Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Odds Fluctuate Before Public Statement

Market statistics shows that users estimated the likelihood of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the midday period of the Friday before the event.

However the odds had increased to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the first hours of January 3rd, suggesting a sudden change in positions right before the official statement was made.

"This particular bet has all the signs of a trade based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.

A handful of other platform users also profited significant sums from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Politicians are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from making trades on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a bet.

Industry Context

Event-driven betting sites have become increasingly popular in recent years, with users able to predict everything from sports to political events.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the Biden administration. However it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is a crime in the securities markets, but there are fewer regulations in the prediction market arena.

An official representative for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
